Patrick Hackett: Scape Boat Sunday 20 September to Sunday 4 October at the Laban Centre Part of the Deptford X Festival Award Commissions 25-27th September - 13:00 to 17:00 In April 2006 the big five biggest banks in the UK posted record profits of at least £32bn between them. On the 9th of August 2007 Gordon Brown had been prime minister for six weeks, Labour had a ten point lead over the conservatives, the economy was growing in excess of 3%, house prices were rising and unemployment was falling. On that day, the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve injected £45bn into jittery financial markets. The Credit crisis had begun. The crisis lead to a downturn which has developed into an almost global recession; one of the worst since records began. Today business analysts are predicting a six year recovery period to return to pre recession levels. Sick of being in a financial crisis and waiting for the recession to bottom out, Patrick Hackett is trying to get some perspective on how the financial system works and where all the money went. Join him as he tries to sail his man-sized paper boat back down the Creek into the Thames, and out of the shadow of Canary wharf and The City. Project inspired by Deirdre Patton Thank you : |
